1. How did you hear about YAC and why are you interested in joining? What specific qualities would you bring to the council? | I heard about YAC through my friends and on the YAC instagram page. I’m interested in joining YAC because I love to volunteer and give back to the community. I also love to interact with other people and develop new skills. My specific qualities I can bring into the council is my commitment and dedication. I also am a very reliable and responsible person, and I can contribute ideas to a group. I also have the ability to understand and relate to others. |
2. What does community service mean to you and how have you been impacted by community service? | Community service means to me is it is voluntary work intended to help people in a particular area. I have been impacted by community service by helping me with my personal growth as a person. It has helped me develop empathy and compassion and also with my self-confidence. It has helped me with my skills especially with leadership and teamwork. |
3. YAC has identified the following youth issues as concerns in our community: (a) Academic pressure, (b) Mental health, (c) Vaping/e-cigarettes. Choose one of the issues. Discuss steps you would recommend taking to address the concern. *Write a minimum of 200 words | With youth mental health this is how I would adress this concern. First I would educate myself and others around mental health in the youth because this would help us understand the signs of mental health and how to provide appropriate support. Next I would create a safe enviornment and encourage the youth that it is okay to open up about your mental health instead of keeping it botteled in. I would put out resources that the youth can use to help get the help that they need and I would also help demonstrate healthy coping mechanisms and encourage the youth to follow these. Lasltly, I would help reduce the stigma around mental health in the youth. Most youth who are suffering with mental health won’t get help because some people could percieve it as “they’re not normal” or some words around that. I would help encourage others and also encourage the youth that you should treat mental health just as important as physical health. I would talk openly about mental health so people in the environment can start to normalize the importance it is to people to get help if they are struggling with their mental health. So, these are the steps I would rake to help with the mental health in youth. |
4. If accepted to YAC, how will you prioritize your commitment to the organization? What extra-curricular events/activities might interfere with your YAC participation? | I would set clear goals and have good time management, and stay organized. I think my only extra-curricular activity that would probably interfere with YAC would be me being on the MHS girls tennis team in the Spring. |
5. Have you applied for YAC membership in the past? If so, when? | No. |
