1. How did you hear about YAC and why are you interested in joining? What specific qualities would you bring to the council?

I heard about YAC from current members and YAC alumni at my school. I am interested in joining because I hear and see all the fun volunteer opportunities and activities YAC is involved in and I would love to be involved too! I would bring positivity and constructive ideas to the council and show my best interest in being a YAC member.

2. What does community service mean to you and how have you been impacted by community service?

Community service is something I take very seriously and find huge pride in. Community service has allowed me to meet many new people from different backgrounds and have new opportunities within my community. NHS has showed me the importance of community service and the ability it has to help the people within my area.

3. YAC has identified the following youth issues as concerns in our community: (a) Academic pressure, (b) Mental health, (c) Vaping/e-cigarettes. Choose one of the issues. Discuss steps you would recommend taking to address the concern. *Write a minimum of 200 words

According to the National Institute of Health, the rate of suicidal behaviors among high school students has increased by 40% over the last decade. Though discussion of the topic has become less stigmatized through awareness campaigns, there are far too many students who feel like they have no one to talk to when they are going through a tough time. Between my obligations to the National Honor Society, Varsity Soccer Team, Competitive Dance Team, Spanish Club, babysitting, and a part-time job at a local business, I can personally attest to the burnout and mental health struggles faced by today’s youth. I believe that our youth could benefit from a program that encourages students to rely on and be there for each other. To address the mental health crisis facing students in the community, my first step as a YAC member would be to implement The Green Bandana Project within Marshall. The Green Bandana Project is a nationwide mental health awareness and suicide prevention campaign that is well-established within many high schools and colleges. After attending an orientation which teaches suicide prevention strategies, student volunteers receive a lime-green bandana to display on their backpack, signifying that they are a safe person to approach for information, resources, or just a listening ear. I believe that I can utilize my voice as a YAC member to bring The Green Bandana Project and a stronger interrelationship among the youth of Marshall.

4. If accepted to YAC, how will you prioritize your commitment to the organization? What extra-curricular events/activities might interfere with your YAC participation?

If I am accepted to YAC I will prioritize my commitment at a top tier. I will attend every meeting to the best of my ability and come ready to engage. I am a Varsity Soccer player and play club soccer in the fall as well, so games might become an interference. I will be sure to let someone know and try my absolute best in a situation like this to balance the conflicting events. I also plan to play Golf in the fall through Marshall High School and don’t believe there will be any conflicts but again I do not know that for certain quite yet. I have always had a very busy schedule and balance everything as best as I can, so I know I can prioritize my commitment even if there is an interference.

5. Have you applied for YAC membership in the past? If so, when?

I have not applied for a YAC membership in the past but I am super happy with my decision to do so now!
