1. How did you hear about YAC and why are you interested in joining? What specific qualities would you bring to the council?

I heard about YAC through people at school who currently participate in it. I am interested in joining because the Marshall Community Foundation has helped me greatly by providing scholarships and I want to give back. I would bring qualities such as responsibility and care for the community to the council.

2. What does community service mean to you and how have you been impacted by community service?

Community service, to me, means serving others where they need help without expecting anything in return. I have been impacted by community service because of the happiness and sense of importance I feel when helping others and making a difference in their lives and the community.

3. YAC has identified the following youth issues as concerns in our community: (a) Academic pressure, (b) Mental health, (c) Vaping/e-cigarettes. Choose one of the issues. Discuss steps you would recommend taking to address the concern. *Write a minimum of 200 words

In order to address the concern of the youth issue of vaping/e-cigarettes, I would recommend first starting in the schools. Vaping is a well-known problem in schools, especially high school, and the ways that I have currently seen this problem attempt to be solved is by locking bathrooms and suspending kids who are caught. However, I feel that these ways of solving this problem are not very effective as they simply try to avoid the problem being in the school without eliminating it overall. Instead, I would recommend that when a kid is caught, that they are not just sent home to miss school, but also given and guided through resources to help eliminate the need for vaping/e-cigarettes altogether. With more resources available to assist kids in quitting this highly addictive practice, it may become less common. Another action that could help is further education on the dangers that these drugs have. Being aware of the harmfulness that vaping and e-cigarettes can have on the body could make people more inclined to stop. Overall, I believe that vaping and e-cigarettes are a prominent concern in our community and bringing more awareness to this issue is an important step to overcoming the problem.

4. If accepted to YAC, how will you prioritize your commitment to the organization? What extra-curricular events/activities might interfere with your YAC participation?

If accepted to YAC, I would prioritize my commitment to the organization by freeing time to attend the meetings and the service projects as well as putting in the necessary time outside of the group meetings. I am involved in spots also, which could potentially interfere with YAC participation, however, this is mostly during the week and shouldn't overlap with the meetings.

5. Have you applied for YAC membership in the past? If so, when?
