| 1. How did you hear about YAC and why are you interested in joining? What specific qualities would you bring to the council? | I heard about YAC through an existing member. I’m interested in joining YAC to get involved in the community and help solve school issues. I love helping other people and making someone’s day better even if it’s just a small act of kindness. I would bring problem solving, leadership and positivity to YAC. |
| 2. What does community service mean to you and how have you been impacted by community service? | Community service to me means brining a smile to someone who’s having a hard time, working together to solve problems and make the community a better and welcoming place for everyone. Community service has impacted me by allowing me to meet knew people of different backgrounds in my community and help form bonds with people over things we are passionate about. |
| 3. YAC has identified the following youth issues as concerns in our community: (a) Academic pressure, (b) Mental health, (c) Vaping/e-cigarettes. Choose one of the issues. Discuss steps you would recommend taking to address the concern. *Write a minimum of 200 words | I am choosing Academic stress as my topic. I would first suggest making and posting an anonymous survey with simple questions for the students to answer. The survey will give feedback on their feelings toward academics and how stressed they actually get about their grades and test scores. After reviewing the completed surveys we would discuss the possible actions that could be taken to help resolve the stress felt by the students. Other possible solutions would be educating students on good and helpful study skills and time management skills that can help them balance school, fun and extracurriculars. Another idea would be to hold an after school group that allows students to come get help with their work and talk with members of YAC about the pressure they feel during the school year. I also think it would be a good idea to talk with administration and ask about the things they could do to help remind students that things like SAT scores and a few bad grades don’t define them or how far they will succeed in life however, still encouraging them to do well. I think we could also talk to counselors and ask them how they can limit the amount of AP courses and honors classes students are allowed to take in one year. I think that some over achieving students take on more than they can manage and it causes them to feel extremely overwhelmed and stressed. |
| 4. If accepted to YAC, how will you prioritize your commitment to the organization? What extra-curricular events/activities might interfere with your YAC participation? | If accepted to YAC I will make the sacrifices needed to prioritize being at every event and meeting. I will make sure to know the dates and inform other commitments of my YAC schedule ahead of time. |
| 5. Have you applied for YAC membership in the past? If so, when? | I have not. |
