1. How did you hear about YAC and why are you interested in joining? What specific qualities would you bring to the council?

I heard about YAC from my friend Bodil Loonen. I am interested in joining because I want to be apart of a group that helps people. I work hard and can bring new ideas.

2. What does community service mean to you and how have you been impacted by community service?

Community service to me is helping people who can’t always get it. People who might be the underdog in a situation or don’t have access to the help they need. As someone who has struggled with mental health sites like “wanna talk about it?” have helped me.

3. YAC has identified the following youth issues as concerns in our community: (a) Academic pressure, (b) Mental health, (c) Vaping/e-cigarettes. Choose one of the issues. Discuss steps you would recommend taking to address the concern. *Write a minimum of 200 words

Mental health in teens is not just ignored by this school but by this country. We are drilled from the time we are little that our academic success will be what brings us a happy life. That In order to achieve a “good” life we must give everything in us to school. Teens have lives and dreams outside of school. These dreams and lives are pushed aside and ignored. We take so much out of ourselves just to hope one day we will be successful. Now I’m not saying we completely change the school system but we can try to work with what it’s ruined. Teens are left with depression, anxiety and even burn out. Our school should provide more information on these subject. Provide resources “Michigan stay well counseling line” or “Mental health America.” We all know what it’s like to be depressed and to be burnt out because of school. We all can understand what each other mean when we say we’re tired. If students don’t feel comfortable talking to an adult, we can talk to each other. We need to have things like support groups or even anonymous support groups. No one understands you better than someone who has gone through the same thing. As a school we need to take action about mental health and need to help people feel seen.

4. If accepted to YAC, how will you prioritize your commitment to the organization? What extra-curricular events/activities might interfere with your YAC participation?

I will attend the meetings and be apart of every opportunity I can. I am a swimmer and are on the soccer team.

5. Have you applied for YAC membership in the past? If so, when?

No
