1. How did you hear about YAC and why are you interested in joining? What specific qualities would you bring to the council?

I saw the application posted on Instagram. I’m interested in becoming a YAC member because I find it to be a great way to give back to my community. I feel it’s a way I can become more involved and to the place that gives me so much everyday. I believe I show the qualities of a YAC member by possessing leadership, communication skills, team work skills, and a hard working mindset.

2. What does community service mean to you and how have you been impacted by community service?

Community service, to me, means actively doing something that will improve a body of people, place, or organization overall. It’s putting forth your best effort and showing compassion towards a cause. Community service follows the rule of, leave things better than you found it. My school receives the profits of community service constantly. The contributions directly improve all the extracurriculars I’m apart of, whether that’s sports, music, or FFA. I know the quality of life in the community is positively influenced by YAC members, which circles back to me, and for that I am grateful.

3. YAC has identified the following youth issues as concerns in our community: (a) Academic pressure, (b) Mental health, (c) Vaping/e-cigarettes. Choose one of the issues. Discuss steps you would recommend taking to address the concern. *Write a minimum of 200 words

B.) Mental Health
I am aware that over the years, mental health has positively declined in teenagers and young adults. With these growing concerns, I feel as a community we should create comforting, welcoming places that can be publicly accessed. Perhaps a community garden, improving outdoor REC spaces, and monitoring parks, rivers, and walking areas. YAC members can dedicate time to cleaning, and creating spaces like this. It would also be a great way to get the community involved and have a new purpose regarding improvement of mental health. Having places such as these around town prompts people struggling with mental health to get outside and be apart a group. To address mental health in school, I feel giving opportunities for students to train themselves in helping peers with mental health would be a great option. Creating a club that informs students the importance of a stable mental health and how to help other students improve theirs. Also having a school environment that encourages kids to partake in sports, clubs, and other extracurriculars could contribute to decreasing poor mental health rates. Being involved and having a support group improves the overall well being of a person and the student body. YAC members are apart of the Marshall Public Schools student body, so we can directly create these clubs and encourage our peers to be involved by advertising and setting the example.

4. If accepted to YAC, how will you prioritize your commitment to the organization? What extra-curricular events/activities might interfere with your YAC participation?

I have been involved in many sports and organizations my whole life. I partake in basketball and track at Marshall High School. I am also apart of the Marshall FFA, symphonic band, and NHS. During the spring and summer I also do AAU basketball, as well as a summertime job. Even with all these things, I have always been able to manage my time and put forth my best effort into each activity. I believe I will still be able to partake in a majority of YAC meetings and activities, despite other requirements.

5. Have you applied for YAC membership in the past? If so, when?
