1. How did you hear about YAC and why are you interested in joining? What specific qualities would you bring to the council? | I've heard about YAC through friends and relatives that are members. I am a part of Albion's YAC and have seen how much the program has done for the community. Therefore, I want to join Marshall's YAC to further impact the communities I am involved in. I have previous knowledge of how grants and funding work. I am a good listener, keep an open mind, and work well with others. |
2. What does community service mean to you and how have you been impacted by community service? | Community service means giving back to the people and the communities I am a part of. Working with Albion YAC, I have met many people in my community, and I am more aware of opportunities that are offered in my community. |
3. YAC has identified the following youth issues as concerns in our community: (a) Academic pressure, (b) Mental health, (c) Vaping/e-cigarettes. Choose one of the issues. Discuss steps you would recommend taking to address the concern. *Write a minimum of 200 words | Mental health is a growing concern in the youth community. Many kids struggle with their mental health because they have no one to go to. If there were more resources in and outside of the schools, kids may feel more comfortable to reach out to professionals for help. Examples of this would be a texting hotline or a safe space within the community for people to be able to talk without judgment. I believe technology use has led to deteriorating mental health in the youth community. Another step to address the mental issues today's youth face would be to create more social activities for kids to hangout together without technology, such as walking clubs, reading groups, and exercise classes in the park. Stress and anxiety about the future can also affect mental health. Classes that help teach life skills are needed. There could be cooking classes and financial literacy classes. A class that would help kids find an after school job would be very helpful, because most teens do not have knowledge of how to search for jobs, fill out applications, how to interview, or how to fill out tax forms. While schools offer some resources, having an additional amount of support within the community would positively benefit the mental health of Marshall's youth. |
4. If accepted to YAC, how will you prioritize your commitment to the organization? What extra-curricular events/activities might interfere with your YAC participation? | I am a member of the Marshall High School marching band and orchestra, cheer team, and the Dance Dynamics competition team. While I am a part of many activities, few should clash with YAC, and if so I will communicate with my coaches to be able to balance all activities. |
5. Have you applied for YAC membership in the past? If so, when? | This is my first time applying. |
