| 1. How did you hear about YAC and why are you interested in joining? What specific qualities would you bring to the council? | I learned about YAC through my grandmother. I am Interested in joining because I would like to help better our community and the schools within it. A few specific qualities that I would bring to the council are dedication, work ethic, responsibility. |
| 2. What does community service mean to you and how have you been impacted by community service? | Community service to me means helping other people so that they can thrive and grow within our community. My grandparents on both sides have been members and on the board of community foundations and seeing their impact on the community has inspired me to do the same. |
| 3. YAC has identified the following youth issues as concerns in our community: (a) Academic pressure, (b) Mental health, (c) Vaping/e-cigarettes. Choose one of the issues. Discuss steps you would recommend taking to address the concern. *Write a minimum of 200 words | From what I have seen throughout my time as a middle schooler, is that vaping/ using e-cigarettes is a very prominent issue within our school district. Most days, when I walked into the school bathroom, I either saw someone vaping or could tell that someone was using a vape or e-cigarette in the bathroom prior to me walking in. Many teens who start using e-cigarettes and vaping young do not understand the long-term effects of the use of e-cigarettes and vapes. Showing students the domino effect that vaping and using e-cigarettes could have on their lives would be a good place to start when working to address the issue. Oftentimes, when students are vaping, they will feel sick causing them to miss school. Students who vape and use e-cigarettes are also more likely to begin to use other types of harmful and addictive substances. Another step that could be taken to stop the use of vapes and e-cigarettes could be to put smoke detectors in the school bathrooms. Using e-cigarettes and vaping in the school bathrooms is very common and may also be a factor that increases the number of teens who use these harmful products. By eliminating this factor, the rate at which teens are pressured to vape in school by their friends and peers would decrease greatly. |
| 4. If accepted to YAC, how will you prioritize your commitment to the organization? What extra-curricular events/activities might interfere with your YAC participation? | As an incoming freshman, I do not have many extracurricular activities at this time. I hope to branch out and get more involved throughout the year. My only current commitments are my 4-H project and possible athletics. |
