| 1. How did you hear about YAC and why are you interested in joining? What specific qualities would you bring to the council? | I heard about YAC from other students and current YAC leaders. Anytime someone brings up YAC it’s always related to positive experiences they have had! This interested me to join YAC because I love being able to be apart of something that would bring support and improvement to the community! Some qualities I would bring into the council would be a positive attitude, and being outgoing! Being apart of student council has also taught me things about leadership and how to help others. These traits can be very helpful to add to the council because positivity is always helpful but sharing aloud positivity is even more beneficial because of its effect it can have on others! |
| 2. What does community service mean to you and how have you been impacted by community service? | Community service to me is a way to give back to the community or add to it for improvement and make it better! I have been impacted by community service myself by always having additional support recourses available. I think that is a very helpful and useful tool for those who may need things like that! Having them available for those who may need them is a very good thing to have throughout the community! |
| 3. YAC has identified the following youth issues as concerns in our community: (a) Academic pressure, (b) Mental health, (c) Vaping/e-cigarettes. Choose one of the issues. Discuss steps you would recommend taking to address the concern. *Write a minimum of 200 words | Out of these many issues, one I would first choose to take steps of improvement would be vaping and smoking. This issue is becoming more and more prevalent in our community, but especially in the youth category. Some steps that we could potentially take to improve this issue could be to install vape smoke detectors in public areas, and limit ads and broadcasts for vape and smoking products. Having the detectors would not only discourage current vapers from smoking in areas where businesses may not want that, but also limit the amount of times youth see them, sparking curiosity. Limiting ads and broadcasts, such as signs in gas stations, would decrease the amount of broadcast and recognition these items are getting. Right now, signs for vapes or e-cigarettes are some of the first things you see when you walk into a gas station or some local stores. Young brains are curious, and then more times they see the ads or real people using these products, makes them want to use them more! Limiting the exposure of these items would make people less likely to use them. Something stores and gas stations could advertise instead could be things like a new candy bar, snack or drink! This would keep the community safe and smoke/vape free while still marketing and doing business! |
| 4. If accepted to YAC, how will you prioritize your commitment to the organization? What extra-curricular events/activities might interfere with your YAC participation? | I am currently involved with sports, student council and ffa. While this is a longer list of things I have made prior commitments to, it has taught me time management and how to prioritize certain things. I understand that participation in YAC meetings and service projects is super important, and I believe that being able to help our community is super important and would be a critical reason for my participation in YAC. |
| 5. Have you applied for YAC membership in the past? If so, when? | I have never applied for YAC in the past! |
