I have heard of YAC by many classmates and friends in Marshall High School, I am interested in joining to make an impact on the Youth and members of our community around us. As a member of the Youth Advisory Council, I would bring a unique blend of qualities that reflect my commitment to making a positive impact in our community. I would bring strong communication skills that allow me to effectively articulate the concerns and ideas of my peers. My empathetic listening enables me to understand diverse perspectives, fostering collaboration among members. With a passion for social issues like mental health and education, I am motivated to advocate for meaning change. Additionally, my organizational abilities help me manage tasks efficiently while contributing creatively to problem-solving discussions. Overall, my dedication to representing all youth and my willingness to learn makes me a valuable asset to the council.

2. What does community service mean to you and how have you been impacted by community service?

To me, community service means giving back and positively impacting the lives of others in my community. It's about collective responsibility and supporting one another. Volunteering on mission trips at my youth group has broadened my perspective on social issues, deepened my empathy for others, and taught me the importance of faith. Ultimately, community service has enriched my personal growth and strengthened my connection to my community.

3. YAC has identified the following youth issues as concerns in our community: (a) Academic pressure, (b) Mental health, (c) Vaping/e-cigarettes. Choose one of the issues. Discuss steps you would recommend taking to address the concern. *Write a minimum of 200 words

Addressing youth mental health isn't something that can be solved with a single solution; it truly demands a multi-layered, comprehensive approach blending education, access, and robust community involvement. Schools stand at the front-line and must embed meaningful mental health education into their curriculum. Inviting trained professionals to lead workshops equips students to recognize signs of distress and teachers practical coping strategies that are essential for their well-being. When mental health becomes a normalized topic within these education settings, stigma begins to break down, making it far more likely that students will reach out when they need support. However, awareness alone is insufficient without real resources in place. Schools need to ensure that students have direct access to mental health professionals, whether by employing full-time counselors or partnering with reputable local organizations dedicated to youth mental health. The process should be timely and straightforward, not bogged down by wait-lists or bureaucratic hurdles that could deter youth from seeking help. Additionally, implementing anonymous digital platforms can provide students with a low-barrier way to seek guidance, which is especially vital for those who may hesitate to speak up in person due to fear for judgment. Community engagement remains a cornerstone of effective mental health support. Peer-led groups foster a sense of belonging and mutual understanding, while broader community events centered on mental wellness contribute significantly to building resilience among youth. By combining these strategies-education, accessible services, and community engagement- we create a supportive infrastructure prioritizing youth mental well-being.
